Nutrition and Health in the UK in 2018
The idea of food as an alternative to mainstream medicine has been around forever. Only recently, though, came to attention of wider public. Two years back kale and paleo were the thing, then avocado took over alongside coconut oil and ketogenic diets. What’s coming next? Ginger and turmeric shots are becoming trendy, as well as jerky. Trends and new ideas in healthy and clean eating world are coming in waves, some to stay some to disappear forever, being debunked as non-working or even harmful (Rabyn & Egan, 2018).
Keywords like low-FODMAP, anti-inflammatory foods, low carb and diabetic diet are being searched online daily with an increasing rate. And for a good reason: more and more people are struggling with depression and anxiety, obesity and diabetes, food induced arthritis and other auto-immune diseases. More people are suffering with food allergies and intolerances than ever before. I’ve done a little research on the topic and was absolutely flabbergasted by the results.
According to the WHO, depression and anxiety are the leading cause of disability worldwide. In the UK, there has been a massive increase of 108% in antidepressant prescriptions in the last 10 years (Campbell, 2017). Newlan (2018) adds a disturbing fact that there has been an increase of 24% in prescriptions for children under 12 in the last 3 years. That means around 18.000 kids on antidepressants in 2018.
Obesity leads to a number of serious and even life-threatening conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer and stroke. In 2017, 26% of adults and 20% of children under 6 in the UK were classified as obese. Many more than that classified as overweight (Niblett, 2018).
